Grey November, Happy Hearts: Embracing the

Finnish Way Through Shades of Grey!

The ninth edition of the International Language Week will be held between 18 and 22 November, 2024, at Turku University of Applied Sciences in Turku, Finland. It is being organised by Turku UAS in cooperation with the Language Centre and the Institute for Intercultural Communication of Aschaffenburg University of Applied Sciences in Germany (co-hosts).

Due to its history, Turku (or Åbo as it is called in Swedish) is a bilingual city with most inhabitants speaking Finnish as their mother tongue and roughly five percent of the city’s population speaking Swedish, making it a natural venue for an international week on multilingualism as well as DEIB.

Bridging Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB)

through Multilingualism and Cultural Understanding

This year’s theme will be exploring the intersections of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) with the rich tapestry of languages and cultures. This event aims to delve into the ways in which language and cultural understanding can foster inclusivity, dismantle barriers, and promote a more equitable society.

We encourage proposals by lecturers, researchers, trainers, scholars, and undergraduate as well as graduate students that present innovative ideas, empirical research, case studies, and practical strategies contributing to the ongoing dialogue on fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion through a lens of languages and cultures. Join us in creating a platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange that will inspire positive change in our global community. Be a part of this transformative conversation and submit your proposals!

We welcome papers on topics including, but by no means limited to:

  1. DEIB initiatives within multilingual workplaces (e.g. in multicultural project teams)
  2. Linguistic diversity as a cornerstone of inclusive environments
  3. Culturally responsive practices in language education
  4. The impact of language on social justice and equity (e.g. integration of immigrants)
  5. Addressing biases and stereotypes through intercultural communication
  6. Indigenous languages and the preservation of cultural heritage
  7. Intersectionality: Examining the interplay of language, culture, and multiple identities
  8. Technology and its role in promoting DEIB in language education access
  9. Linguistic and cultural perspectives on inclusive storytelling and media representation
  10. Case studies and best practices in DEIB implementation within linguistically diverse communities

If you wish to enrich the ILW 2024 with innovative ideas regarding the above topics, we kindly invite you to participate in joint sessions, as well as to give presentations, conduct workshops, or hold poster sessions.
