MESH – Networks and mentoring as immigrant employment support 

 

The goal of the project is to support the placement of people with an immigrant backgrounds, in other words international experts, in the Finnish labor market. The aim of the project is to develop, test and disseminate mentoring models and practices, and to systemize mentoring and network utilization. The utilization of migrant professional networks will be developed by increasing their competence to search, find and develop their own working life connections and the path to employment supported by their professional networks.   

Critical factors in immigrant mentoring practices are identified at the projects international level. Minimum criteria for quality mentoring are created, utilizing experiments from different countries, and the related concepts are clarified. In addition, a networking approach will be developed with international partners to help employers and employees meet more effectively. 

As a result of the project, mentoring practices systematize resulting in the identification of benefits, operating methods and goals of mentoring the employment process and the utilization of mentoring in employment and cooperation with employers will be facilitated.  Immigrants’ professional networks for working life are developing and supporting employment in the region’s economy. Mentoring methods are being refined and criteria for mentoring can be set and evaluated. The aim is to make it easier for companies and other employers in the area to employ or train an immigrant with a mentor’s support. Finding these employers will be easier when tools are available to take advantage of professional networks.
